What red light therapy does, and what it does not

Photobiomodulation has real mechanisms behind it. It is also not a standalone weight loss solution, and it is worth being clear about both.

Red light laser therapy, also called low-level laser therapy or photobiomodulation therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-power red or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function and promote healing.

The fat cell mechanism

Red light penetrates the skin and targets fat cells. The light stimulates those cells to release stored lipids into the bloodstream, shrinking the cells in size, and the released fats are then metabolized by the body as energy.

Circulation and inflammation

The therapy enhances blood flow and stimulates the lymphatic system, helping the body naturally eliminate released fat and toxins, which can reduce bloating and improve body contouring. Because chronic inflammation can hinder weight loss efforts, reducing it helps the body function more efficiently.

The skin side

Red light laser therapy is widely used for pain relief, wound healing, and skin rejuvenation, and it can stimulate collagen to tighten skin and reduce wrinkles.

What it is not

It is not a standalone solution for weight loss. Results are gradual and vary by individual, noticeable fat reduction may occur after several sessions, and optimal results come when it is combined with a healthy lifestyle. Patients are encouraged to exercise after sessions and to stay hydrated.

How it differs from Cool Sculpting

The two get confused because both are non-invasive and both address fat. Cryolipolysis uses controlled cooling to destroy fat cells in a targeted area, and those cells do not come back. Red light therapy causes existing cells to release their stored lipids and shrink, which is a different outcome and one that depends on what your body does with the released fat afterwards. Neither replaces the other, and patients often end up discussing both at the same consultation.

What a course looks like

Results are gradual and vary by individual, and noticeable fat reduction may occur after several sessions rather than after one. Optimal results are achieved when the therapy is combined with a healthy lifestyle, which is why the aftercare instruction to exercise and stay hydrated is part of the treatment rather than general advice. Red light therapy at Axiom starts at $150, and how many sessions your goal actually needs is a question for the consultation.

Who tends to be a good candidate

People close to their ideal weight with areas of stubborn fat, those seeking a non-invasive alternative to procedures like liposuction, and patients committed to a balanced diet and regular exercise for maintenance. Chronic inflammation can hinder weight loss efforts, and reducing it helps the body function more efficiently, which is part of why patients often report feeling better before they see a measurable change.
